One thing that new ratty owners seem to overlook when purchasing cage supplies is the legendary rat hammock. Seriously, you are going to want to get one for your rats! These hammocks give rats a place to lounge out, somewhere that they can call their “safe spot”. They are also fairly inexpensive, and come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, patterns, colors, and materials. There’s definitely a hammock out there that will match your cage decorations or room decor; and if there isn’t, the beautiful part is it can be CUSTOM MADE!

Why Do Rats Love Hammocks So Much?

Rats tend to like high spots. Every owner will notice his or her rats like to get up on their “perches” and observe the entire room. Perhaps they’re eyeballing that delicious double chocolate chip cookie sitting on the coffee table a few yards away, or maybe they’re wondering how much fun it would be to rip into the sofa and climb around in it. Either way, they’re watching everything you do and everything you have from up high. Your home is now their kingdom, and their perch is their throne. Since rats can be fairly lazy, the hammock is an ideal perch. It’s cozy, comfy, and cuddly; perfect to plot their little ratty schemes and dreams right before the oh-so important 7th nap of the day.

Where Can You Get Adorable Hammocks?

There are a couple of different places to find rat hammocks; whether it be a pet store, online store, or a local vendor. The problem with pet stores is that prices  are steep while options are VERY limited. However, this is the quick and easy solution for a rat hammock. You can get one immediately.

The next would be big online stores like Amazon or Ebay. These guys tend to have a lot more variety and better prices. You just have to watch out with what you buy; some items are poorly made, especially some of the Chinese models.

Then, you have local vendors and hobbyist crafters. These guys will probably provide the most quality, variety, and personalization that you could possibly ask for. Many are also involved with local rescue

groups, as well. This is a huge plus; as some will donate a portion of proceeds. These crafty little suckers also come up with new, innovative, attractive hammocks that you CANNOT find in other places; they come up with their own little designs. It’s like Ashley Furniture for rodents. The prices ARE going to be a bit more steep. Face it: you are paying for expensive fabrics (fabric is NOT cheap, guys), and the person’s time (don’t we all have families to feed?).

Unless you are buying in bulk, which is a good excuse to buy the cheaper ones, you are best off with a private seller. I also saw someone’s page (linked on this blog post under photos) who had MINIONS fabric for hammocks. I mean, MINIONS! I’m definitely going to have to add a photo of the finished product here. Of course, like I said, you can find links to some vendors through the photo credits here, or you can do a search online for them. Either way, ratties need hammocks!
