They Worship Rats Here, and I’d Love to Visit!

This is the rat temple:
Karni Mata Temple.

In Bikaner, India, there are special caretakers who manage the staggering population of over 20,000 rats in this beautiful temple. Day in and day out, they clean up after the rats, feed them, and offer them water. The rats not only have caretakers though; the public as a whole protects them.

These rats are believe to be the children of a beloved goddess, making them a sacred part of the community. They are treated with love, respect, and treats galore!

I’d love to visit this place someday, India is a beautiful place and this only adds to the list of exciting things I would love to see in that country. The sheer idea of tens of thousands of rats running free is astounding; I cannot imagine how many pounds of food they must go through!

Getting these little rats out of the house is important from a disease standpoint; we never know what a wild animal might be carrying. Generally, the animal is healthy and happy and just wants a bite to eat or a warm place to stay. FOR those who own abused rescues or skittish pet rats, I advise having a humane trap for them too!  It makes life SO much easier when they get out! Read more
